A septic system consists of two parts; a tank that the wastewater and sewage flows into, and a drainfield. After the wastewater and sewage are in the tank, they separate with solids falling to the bottom. These solids will decompose overtime and the liquids move through a filter into the drainfield. From there, the wastewater will be reabsorbed into the soil, which will detoxify it.

Not necessarily. A house shouldn’t be discounted because of a septic system as long as it has been properly maintained over the years. If the house uses a septic system, have it thoroughly inspected before purchasing it. Replacing an entire system is costly.

The everyday maintenance of septic tank system is fairly simple. Stay away from flushing things like diapers and paper towels down the toilet and in the kitchen, things like coffee grounds and grease can be problematic if poured down the drain. If you suspect you have a clog or a septic issue, such as blocked toilets or drains, call a professional and have it serviced. Water conservation is also a good practice to maintain the function of a septic tank.

A properly designed septic tank should function properly for three to five years. Just to be on the safe side, however, you should have it inspected every year to check for problems such as blocks, leaks, or pipe erosion. Waste from the garbage disposal can clog and damage your septic system, so if you do use one, it’s important to have your septic tank pumped more regularly. Pumping your septic system every year will keep it clean and unclogged.
